名词的种类
名词可以根据意义分成：
1.专有名词（proper noun），表示人、地方、月份、星期、国家、组织、书报等专有的名称。专有名词的第一个字母要大写。
John Smith约翰﹒斯密斯 Asia亚洲 Great Britain大不列颠 March三月 Sunday星期天 Washington Post华盛顿邮报
专有名词中的冠词、介词、连词的第一个字母不需要大写，除非在句首。
the People’s Republic of China 中 华 人 民 共 和 国
the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland 不列颠及北爱尔兰联合王国
但是，书报和文章等的第一个词是冠词或者介词时，即使不在句首，第一个字母也要大写。
Jane was reading The Observer when I saw him.
我看见他时，简正在读《观察家报》。
结构分析：Jane是主语，was reading是谓语动词，过去进行时，The Observer是宾语，when引导时间状语从句，I是主语，saw是see的过去式，作谓语动词，过去一般时，him是宾语。
I have a copy of A New History of the United States.
我有一本新的美国历史。
结构分析：I是主语，have是谓语动词，现在一般时，a copy of A New History of the United States是名词词组，作宾语。
名词复数的构成
数(number)是区分单数和复数的语法范畴。可数名词有单数和复数。单数(singular)通常表示“一”，例如：a/one day, an/one meter；复数(plural)通常表示“大于一”，例如：two days, one and a half hours, 3 meters, 1.1 inches。但是，表示“小于一”时(half除外)，英国英语用复数，例如：0.4 meters, 0.2 inches；美国英语用单数，例如：0.4 meter, 0.2 inche。表示“半”时，无论英美都用单数，例如：one half day, half an hour。表示“零”时，zero hours(零点)、zero degrees(零度)时用复数，其他用单数，倒如：zero hour(发动进攻时刻)、zero growth(零增长)、zero norm(最低限额)。
关于数的几点说明
4.以-s结尾的名词，能常用作单数
1)疾病名arthrilis(关节类), bronchitis(支气管类), diabetes(糖尿病), measles(麻疹), mumps(肥腺炎)，rickets(佝偻病)等，但也有人用作复数。
Mumps is a kind of infectious disease. 肥腺炎是一种传染病。
结构分析：Mumps是主语，is是系动词或称谓语动词，现在一般时，a kind of infectious disease是名词词组，作表语。
Rickets is/are quite rare now. 佝偻病现在很少见了。
结构分析：Rickets是主语，is/are是系动词或称谓语动词，现在一般时，quite rare disease是形容词词组，作表语，now是时间状语。
Measles is/are contagious. 麻疹具有传染性。

2)游戏名billiards(台球), bowls, checkers/chequers(西洋跳棋), darts, dominoes, marbles等, 但是表示游戏用具时是复数。
试比较:
Billiards is my favorite game.台球是我喜欢的游戏。
Two billiards are missing. 两个台球不见了。
结构分析：Billiards是名词，作主语，is是系动词或称谓语动词，现在一般时，my favorite game是名词词组，作表语。Two billiards是名词词组，作主语，are是系动词或称谓语动词，现在一般时，missing是表语。
Skittles resembles bowling. 撞柱游戏的柱子类似于保龄球。
All nine skittles were brought down. 所有的九颗柱子都被击倒了。
结构分析：Skittles是名词，作主语，resembles是谓语动词，现在一般时，bowling是表语。All nine skittles是名词词组，作主语，were brought down是被动谓语，过去一般时。
cards 用作游戏名时也是复数。
Cards are not allowed here. 这里不允许打牌。
结构分析：Cards是名词，作主语，are not allowed是被动谓语，现在一般时，here是地点状语。
3)学科名acoustics, economies, electronics, ethics, linguistics, mathematics, mechanics, optics，phonetics, physics, politics, statistics, tactics等，但表示其他意义时通常是复数。
试比较:
Statistics is a branch of mathematics.统计学是数学的一个分支。
New statistics show the economy is continuing to grow. 新的统计数据表明，我国经济正在持续增长。

4)其他以-s结尾的名词如news, shambles, summons等。
The news is at seven. 新闻在七点。
I'm waiting for a summons from the boss. 我正在等待老板的招见。
